Help Save Swedenborg

Four years ago, the tiny Swedenborg Chapel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, fought to preserve its building. Amidst much public outcry, the neighborhood and the city joined forces to keep a developer from turning the Chapel into the atrium of a high-rise condominium.

Its body safe, the congregation is now fighting for its soul. Unless its 35 members can come up with $2.2 million by March 31, 2003 to buy the building, they will lose their right to continue worshipping on the now landmarked site that has housed Swedenborgians for over a century.

This is a story with no villains and as yet unknown heroes. Its outcome will depend on the good will of many who contribute energy, and finances, to save this small pastoral enclave that is at risk of becoming an endangered species.
