Welcome to BKUN News

Welcome to the first issue of BKUN News. For those of you not yet familiar with the Brahma Kumaris, we are an international non-governmental organization that holds a General Consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. Our headquarters are in Mt. Abu, Rajasthan, India and we have 5,400 centers in 83 countries.

This new publication is like a quilt of many patches, giving a glimpse of the diverse activities with which the BKs are involved. Being an organization with so many bases around the world, we support activities at many different levels of participation. The aim of the BKUN News is not so much to be a ‘hot off the press’ publication as to catch the flavor of the events covered, especially the range and depth of BK involvement.

We open with an inspirational message from Dadi Janki to set the tone of the spiritual dimension from which we work. Sister, Catch This Dime, a poem by Luisah Teish, speaks to the real enemy of humankind. We move to the President of India’s visit to the Om Shanti Retreat Center in New Delhi, a newly established complex of the Brahma Kumaris. Ante Glavas — a young participant of the Call-of-the-Time Dialogue, an ongoing worldwide dialogue series that focuses on self-transformation and world transformation — speaks about his work in Croatia. These pieces aim at highlighting the voices of individuals.

Events are featured in the different regions of the world. In Africa, we talk about COMESA; in Latin America, about the World Social Forum; in Europe, about the workshop on righting racism and World Summit on Information Society (WSIS); in North America, about the Third Eye portrait exhibit.  We also cite the important work that is being done by the United Nations Secretary-General in relation to the civil society and include a special on the Commission on the Status of Women.

We hope you enjoy this first issue and we welcome your comments.  E-mail us at bkun@bkwsu.com
